ENSCO with our Ground Penetrating Radar System (GPR) partner is proud to offer GPR with our comprehensive track inspection vehicles. GPR works by inducing a radar signal into the track and detecting anomalies such as fouled ballast, issues with subgrade, and water pockets. GPR is a useful track inspection technology to assess ballast conditions that can’t be seen from the surface.

Ballast Fouling

  • A key advantage of ENSCO’s offering is having the GPR data synchronized with other inspection technologies, such as the Track Geometry Measurement System (TGMS) and Track Component Imaging System (TCIS).
  • This enables a complete inspection of the ballast to assess its condition, particularly in regard to ballast fouling. The deteriorating condition of ballast rock turning into mud spots can lead to safety concerns if undetected.
  • Additionally, when integrated with the GPR system, and  the Clearance Measurement System (CMS), the ballast condition with the profile shape of the ballast is available.
