Visual Challenges of Underwater Environments
Searching for a Target of Interest (TOI) in a marine environment from an aircraft can be as challenging as looking for a needle in a haystack. The search area can cover many miles. The view is often obscured by the sun’s reflection off the water, the depth of the search, biological species, weather, or other environmental variables. The target can be hidden behind unseen bathymetry features, such as volcanoes, trenches, canyons, and other 3-D edifices, rising from the ocean floor, further hindering the search. For mission operators who must search, identify and analyze targets of interest in a marine environment, a system that delivers visualization in the underwater environment, and with the same accuracy when transitioning to land, can be the difference between mission success and failure.

ENSCO Avionics’ SVS Core 2.0 underwater solution is a software application that enables underwater system providers to create an SV application for an underwater acoustic solution at a fraction of the cost of internal development. A software-only application that is platform independent and compatible with any underwater system, the SVS Core 2.0 provides a clear view representation of the environment in all weather conditions and situations, tailored to the customer’s platform attributes and mission needs.
Currently, the SVS Core 2.0 underwater solution is in theater today as an integrated function in U.S. Navy P-3C AOP 4.2 software.
