Increasing Railroad Safety – ENSCO Delivers Track Inspection Systems for Canadian National Test Car

ENSCO delivers Track Inspection Systems for Canadian National Test CarSpringfield, Va., April 1, 2009 – ENSCO, Inc. today announced that it delivered state-of-the-art track inspection systems for Canadian National’s (CN) new test car. These safety-enhancing technologies will be used for the automated inspection of track geometry, rail profile and joint bars across CN’s rail line network. The systems will assist CN with inspection of 75,000 track miles per year.

This delivery represents the first installation in which ENSCO integrated its Joint Bar Inspection System (JBIS) and Track Geometry Measurement System (TGMS) on the same vehicle. The combination of these two technologies results in an extremely strong, capable and efficient inspection system.

ENSCO delivered the following technologies on the car:

  • TGMS – using non-contact sensors, measures track gage, crosslevel, alignment, profile, and curvature
  • JBIS – high-speed optical system that detects joint bar cracks as small as 1 mm, identifies the location, while moving at speeds of up to 60 mph
  • Rail Profile – measures cant and rail wear
  • Right-of-way video – captures right-of-way images every 30 feet to allow users to visually correlate track features with potential exception locations
  • Navigator – an inertial, differential Global Positioning System (GPS)

“We’re proud to help CN further improve their safety performance,” said Gary Martin, ENSCO’s Project Manager for the CN system. “Making track measurement more efficient and easier for the railroads is one of our top priorities.”
