U.S. Department of Energy Awards Contract to ENSCO to Build and Test Fortis Railcar

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) – Office of Nuclear Energy (NE) has placed the award of a contract to ENSCO, Inc. to fabricate and test a prototype of an 8-axle cask railcar, known as a Fortis railcar, to transport spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste. As the prototype is constructed, ENSCO, Inc., a leading provider of railroad engineering services, will pursue conditional approval from the Association of American Railroads’ (AAR) Equipment Engineering Committee to use the car for the transport of radioactive material.

Today, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and ENSCO, Inc. celebrated 50 years of transportation research and development at the Transportation Technology Center (TTC) in Pueblo, CO, during an event with federal and state government officials and commercial transportation representatives welcoming in a new era at the TTC. The TTC is owned by the U.S. Department of Transportation and FRA and is under a new operations contract with ENSCO, Inc., a globally recognized leader in transportation, aerospace and national security technologies. The site is utilized for a variety of government research, testing and training programs and is home to the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) Surface Transportation Security Readiness Facility.

ENSCO Rail Announces Stadler to Test New DMUs at the Transportation Technology Center

ENSCO Rail, the global engineering services company, announced today that it has reached an agreement with Stadler US Inc, the rail vehicle manufacturer, to conduct operational testing at the Transportation Technology Center (TTC) in Pueblo, Colorado. Testing will be performed on Stadler Diesel-Multiple Unit (DMU) trainsets in support of its delivery to the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART). ENSCO, Inc. assumes management of the U.S. Department of Transportation – Federal Railroad Administration’s TTC research and test facility October 1.

ENSCO was featured in the September 22, 2022, digital issue of Railway Age on the transition of the new contract and changes the FRA anticipates under new management at the Transportation Technology Center (TTC) in Pueblo, Colorado. The Commentary article, TTC’s Second Half-Century: An Expanded Role, by FRA officials Dr. Maryam Allahyar Wyrick and Sean Woody, provided readers with an update on the expansive new research and training capabilities at the TTC, the important safeguards on data privacy and protection for commercial partners using the facility, and ENSCO’s role as the new contractor taking over management on October 1, 2022.
