  • Two ENSCO Computer Scientists have published their paper on cyber oriented digital engineering (CODE) in the journal, Systems Engineering.
  • The paper shows how CODE systems engineering processes lead to cybersecurity that is “baked into” the software-defined systems of modern times.
  • Dr. Joe Mitola, one of the paper’s authors, is also responsible for leading the global development of software defined and cognitive radio technologies.

Dr. Joe Mitola and Mark Prys - Cyber Oriented Digital Engineering (CODE) Paper on INCOSE Systems Engineering Journal 2024ENSCO employees Dr. Joe Mitola, an expert in software defined and cognitive systems, and Mark Prys, who leads cybersecurity pursuits and projects for ENSCO and the U.S. Space Force (USSF), have published their paper, “Cyber Oriented Digital Engineering (CODE),” in Systems Engineering, the Journal of the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE).

CODE, which fuses cyber thinking with systems thinking, provides a repeatable systems-engineering process that prioritizes protecting systems against cyberattacks. In the paper, Dr. Mitola and Prys lay out a repeatable process for achieving the high levels of system security required by today’s software-defined, digital, and hybrid cyber-physical systems. Prys and Mitola outline why CODE must be leveraged in the face of the costly limitations that software-based cybersecurity create.

Dr. Mitola led the global development of software defined and cognitive radio technologies. Prys is a certified information systems security professional (CISSP) and certified chief information security officer (C|CISO) with more than 35 years of experience in commercial and government computer operations.

The article is featured in the January 2024 issue of Systems Engineering (pages 109-119). The full piece is available to the public in PDF, here: https://incose.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/sys.21710
