The process of locating defects at joints and switches along the rail surface is a particularly challenging problem. Presently, track inspectors must walk to the track to locate flaws. ENSCO has developed a method to locate these flaws in an automated process that greatly reduces inspection time in the field. ENSCO’s Rail Impact & Ride Quality Measurement system uses advanced signal processing algorithms and sensors, which can be mounted on any loaded car or integrated with inspection car measurement systems, to locate misaligned switches, crushed rail heads, surface flaws, and large gaps between rails.
