Falls Church, Va., February 13, 2006 — ENSCO, Inc., a diversified research, development and information technology company, is a member of a team that has been awarded the contract with the National Weather Service (NWS) for operations, maintenance and evolution of the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS). The total contract is estimated to be approximately $300 million over 10 years if all the options are exercised. Under the terms of the subcontract, ENSCO will participate in all phases of the contract providing help desk services, software integration and test services as well as continuous product improvement.
AWIPS is a critical technology tool for the National Weather Service; it is the heart of NWS warning system which alerts the population to life-threatening and time-sensitive weather events like tornadoes, severe weather and flash floods. AWIPS provides an extensible architecture to allow for highly available data communications, processing, and meteorological and hydrologic display capabilities in an integrated environment. It supports the NWS operational mission by providing a very efficient and effective means for forecasters to prepare and issue timely, accurate forecasts and warnings.
Leading the effort is Raytheon Information Solutions (RIS), a division of the Raytheon Company, based in Reston, Va. RIS delivers customer-focused industry best practices and best-of-breed IT solutions that enable federal agency mission objectives.
