Falls Church, Va., September 11, 2006 — ENSCO Inc., a diversified research, development and information technology company, today announced a third major airline has signed up with ENSCO’s weather group to receive its polar weather service. ENSCO and its team of meteorologists will support and provide Korean Air (KAL) with the most current and accurate information on polar wind speed, polar air temperatures and solar radiation levels.
Today’s announcement marks a milestone for ENSCO, which has only recently arrived in the commercial airline weather space. ENSCO signed a deal to provide global and polar weather services to United Airlines and Singapore Air Lines starting in February 2006. “Three major airlines in six months is a big accomplishment, however, our corporate plan calls for continued growth,” said ENSCO’s Director of Engineering, Robert Gillen. ENSCO has been providing weather services to defense related entities, including NASA in support of the space shuttle launches, for decades. “Moving into the commercial airline space was a great strategic move for ENSCO,” further said Mr. Gillen.
Korean Air recently started flying routes over the North Pole from the United States to Asia. There are several specific issues that need to be closely monitored when flying over the poles. Air temperature is a big concern especially at 36,000 feet. If air temperatures drop below minus 65 degrees Celsius, jet fuel will begin to gel, which is inefficient and possibly dangerous. Excessive solar radiation and availability of suitable alternate landing sites are also a significant concern. ENSCO uses existing technologies and expert aviation meteorologists to provide first-rate weather information and data to aid the planning for safe and efficient routes for global travel.
“We plan a continued steady growth in weather support for commercial aviation,” said ENSCO’s Manager of Aviation Weather Business Development, Garry Hinds. “Providing the total weather support for United’s global operation has positioned ENSCO to become the premier weather provider for this segment of the market.”
