ENSCO, Inc. Wins NASA Contract Renewal

Falls Church, Va., and Cocoa Beach, Fla., September 27, 2006 — ENSCO Inc., a diversified research, development and information technology company, today announced it had been awarded a one-year contract renewal by NASA at the John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida for management of the Applied Meteorology Unit (AMU). The AMU, at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS) has been staffed by ENSCO meteorologists since its inception in 1991. The AMU is a joint venture of NASA/KSC, the United States Air Force, and the National Weather Service.

The AMU evaluates and transitions weather technology from development to operations, specifically in support of America's space program. This technology conversion contributes to advanced weathertools for the space shuttle, military, and commercial spaceport operations.

“The AMU is a bridge between the meteorological research community and operational forecasters at the 45th Weather Squadron at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, the Spaceflight Meteorology Group at Johnson Space Center in Houston, and the National Weather Service in Melbourne, Fla.,” said ENSCO AMU Program Manager Bill Bauman. “Our primary mission has been and will continue to be channeling emerging technologies through development and implementation for not only our agency customers, but for the entire weather forecasting community as well. Tasking by our primary customers assures that the AMU’s work results in products with direct operational application.”

Recent products developed for the AMU customers include an Anvil Threat Corridor tool for the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) to support all space launches from KSC/CCAFS and space shuttle landings at KSC or at any shuttle abort landing location worldwide; a Lightning Climatology of East Central Florida to assist forecasters with daily lightning probabilities; and a Stable Low Cloud Forecasting study to support space shuttle landing forecasts for KSC.

ENSCO has a long history of providing sophisticated weather technology support to government agencies and other weather related entities. In addition to the AMU contract, ENSCO supports the National Weather Service contract team on the next generation AWIPS program. Further establishing themselves as a leader in the weather community, ENSCO unveiled the MetWise™ product-line in 2004. MetWise is a comprehensive weather visualization and decision making assistance tool for the professional weather community. This year, ENSCO leveraged its extensive meteorological experience and entered the commercial airline weather support space. ENSCO now provides global weather support to three major airlines, including United Airlines.
